Polish, Scratch Repair or Respray? A Geelong Paint Damage Guide
PAINT DAMAGE GUIDE · GEELONG & BELLARINE
A scratch does not automatically mean a respray, and polishing is not the answer to every mark. The right starting point depends on how deep the damage is, whether paint is missing and how much of the panel is affected.
1 · Polish or paint correction.
If the paint is still intact and the problem is surface transfer, haze, swirls or a shallow mark, paint correction is the least invasive place to start. Polishing can improve defects in sound paint, but it cannot put missing colour or clear coat back.
Our orange Volkswagen Transporter is a good example: selected stone chips needed local repair, while much of the surrounding paint responded to correction. The two processes solved different problems on the same vehicle.
2 · Localised scratch or bumper repair.
When paint has been broken through but the damage is still concentrated in a suitable area, a local repair can make more sense than refinishing the whole panel. The BMW X1 front bumper is the clearest recent example.
That repair involved sanding and feathering, cleaning and degreasing, plastic primer / adhesion promoter, primer, refinement, colour and blending, clear coat, then cure and finishing. See the BMW X1 repair process.
3 · Panel refinishing or respray.
Broader damage, failed clear coat, extensive chips, previous repairs or a panel that needs a uniform new finish can be better suited to panel refinishing. That may also mean removing the part so edges and recesses can be prepared properly.
Our recent white-panel project shows this process from preparation through to finished gloss. See the panel refinishing project.
How do we decide?
Paint still intact?
Correction may be enough if the defect sits within sound paint and can be improved safely.
Paint missing in a local area?
A local cosmetic repair may suit selected scratches, chips and bumper damage.
Damage spread wider?
A broader refinish may give a more uniform result when the affected area or existing finish calls for it.
What photos should you send?
Start with three: one photo of the whole panel, one close-up of the damage and one side angle showing how the mark catches the light. Add the vehicle model, colour and your suburb. Photos are enough to start the conversation; some repairs still need an inspection before the final method is confirmed.
Not sure which category your damage fits?
You do not need to diagnose it yourself. Send the photos and we’ll explain whether the sensible first step is correction, local repair or refinishing.
